They don't fault Adam Goucher, because he just wants to run. But they'd like to run, too. Welcome to the hullabaloo over the men's 10,000 meters. After an appeal, Goucher's in tonight's race ahead of seven others with faster times. They're not happy about it.

Anna Willard sets American record in winning Olympic Trials steeplechase

With 600m to go, Anna Willard made her move and took the lead over the water barrier. She quickly gapped Barringer and Anderson, and at the bell the winner seemed clear. Willard went on to win in 9:27.59 to break the American record, posting the fastest time ever on U.S. soil in the process. Anderson (9:30.75) overtook Barringer (9:33.11) to round out the Olympic Team.

The runners who filed appeals to get into the 5000 and 10,000 were told their appeals weren't even considered because the field sizes were set and were not going to be expanded, said Little. However, they made an exception for one athlete (Adam Goucher of Nike) in the 10,000 that required leapfrogging over other runners with faster qualifying times. (Thanks for writing this Amby, I'm sure there was pressure from RunnersWorld as Nike is a large contributer to your ad department.)

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), in partnership with UK Athletics (UKA), today launched a major new drive to promote athletics globally with a cutting edge magazine and interactive global website The UK, as host to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, is seen by the IAAF as the ideal partner and will become the first country to see SPIKES rolled out.

When Hayward Field roared its loudest, Vin Lananna was on the rail beneath the Bowerman building, not far from the statue. He saw the local boys flash by. Watched first Nick Symmonds and then Andrew Wheating blast around the curve, into a wall of noise. Watched them finish first and second. Saw Christian Smith dive for third, completing a hometown sweep.

The American Family Association obviously didn't foresee the problems that might arise with its strict policy to always replace the word "gay" with "homosexual" on the Web site of its Christian news outlet, OneNewsNow. The group's automated system for changing the forbidden word wound up publishing a story about a world-class sprinter named "Tyson Homosexual" who qualified this week for the Beijing Olympics.

Former world record holder Alberto Salazar went to the hospital with dehydration and high blood pressure Thursday, one day before the start of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene. Salazar felt faint but had people nearby to help him.

About 400 runners, many of whom had spent months training for Sunday's Seafair Marathon (Seattle Marathon), missed the shuttle to the starting line and didn't make the start, even though it was delayed 15 minutes after organizers realized there was a problem.
