Parr, Kimmel Win Inaugural Cheyenne Cañon Mountain Race
Posted by TheRunning
Late afternoon thunderstorms are typical in Colorado Springs, but overcast skies and drizzle in the morning are rare - especially in July. Sunday morning was an exception with intermittent rain showers and cool temperatures greeting runners at 7:00am for the women's start of the inaugural Cheyenne Cañon Mountain Race, an 8 kilometer up & down loop course which would determine two of the four members of this year's Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team. It was still cool for the men's race at 8:30am for the 12 kilometer course with another two team spots up for grabs.

Saucony 2009XC - Nate Jenkins
Posted by TheRunning
I think we all have our ups and downs in sports as well as life. I think running in particular is a perfect analogy for life. In my case running and life have pretty much become one intermingled thing. I tend to be a streaky person in terms of emotions, luck and generally how I'm doing in the race of life. by Nate Jenkins via Flotrack

Barringer sees Prefontaine Classic loss as motivator
Posted by TheRunning
In the 11 months since she elected not to turn pro and instead return to Colorado as a distance runner, Jenny Barringer has set six collegiate records and won two NCAA titles.Yet in what she calls a "storybook" final year of her collegiate career, her signature race was a loss.Barringer, 22, took on the pros in the 1,500 meters in the June 7 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore. Kicking furiously, she just missed nipping Ethiopia's Gelete Burka and finished second in 3 minutes, 59.90 seconds, setting a collegiate record while improving her personal best by almost nine seconds. In her fifth attempt at the distance, she became the youngest U.S. woman and fourth overall to break the four-minute barrier.

Nate Jenkins is a hero for all runners with more grit than genetic gifts
Posted by TheRunning
At 6 feet tall and 160 pounds, Nate Jenkins is a giant among marathon runners. Both James Carney and Josh Rohatinsky, two Americans who took turns at the front in New York, weigh under 130 pounds. Many of the African athletes are even slighter. (Paul Tergat is an inch taller than Jenkins but weighs 30 pounds less.) Alongside Carney and Rohatinsky, Jenkins' torso looked too large and his legs unwieldy; size aside, he runs with a halting and strained gait, quite unlike that of the Africans, who are famously smooth and rhythmic. He is also preternaturally hairy. In a sport where male athletes sometimes shave their legs, Jenkins rarely shaves his face, and hadn't for the marathon. To Feuer and NBC's TV viewers he must have seemed like some mad interloper thrashing his way to the front of the field.

Running is no place to waste time

Ryan Hall went to the mountaintop last weekend and gained unexpected enlightenment from an old stoner hanging out on the summit of Mount Sanitas. In the middle of a run, Hall discovered even an aging hippie can have good advice for a world-class marathoner and for those of us who are considerably slower. America's best marathoner shared his story with a gathering of 80 to 100 runners Sunday on the eve of the Bolder Boulder.

Colorado has been nicknamed the “Centennial State” because it became a state in the year 1876, 100 years after the signing of our nation's Declaration of Independence. Colorado also is called “Colorful Colorado” presumably because of it's magnificent scenery of mountains, rivers and plains. This phrase has decorated maps, car license plates, tourist information centers and souvenirs of all kinds!
