Kate O'Neill's Journal

Kate O'Neill's JournalOctober 8, 2008 Journal Entry (Posted October 9, 2008)Tightrope Walking and RunningToday while I was doing my core exercises at the gym, I heard an interview on NPR with Philippe Petit, a French high-wire artist best known for walking on a tightrope between New York City’s Twin Towers on August 7, 1974. I remember hearing stories about him a number of years ago and thinking that he must be crazy. After hearing him relate his adventures in his own words, I regret making such a snap judgment. His line of work may fall outside of the mainstream, but the passion he brings to it is something that I aspire to bring to every race I enter, especially the upcoming Bank of America Chicago Marathon. by Kate O'Neill

The Chicago Marathon has been the site of four world records though the strong fields are not likely to produce another Sunday. But the men's record for 26.2 miles may be headed toward a barrier some don't think is realistic, the 2-hour mark. Two weekends ago Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia lowered his world record by 27 seconds to 2:03:59.
