Track-Honed Shobukhova Speeds to a Win
Posted by TheRunning
Liliya Shobukhova, the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon champion, began her marathon career by accident. Already very successful on the track, Shobukhova, who had set a world indoor record for 3,000 meters in 2006 and ran the sixth fastest time ever for 5K on the track in 2008, was supposed to run that distance in a road race in Providence last fall. When that event invitation fell through, she went instead to the 2008 Philadelphia Distance Run Half Marathon where she beat marathon great Catherine Ndereba, with a time of 1:10:21. From that came an offer from the London Marathon to run her debut there in April 2009. There she finished third in 2:24:24, and her future was sealed.

Wanjiru Wins Chicago Marathon

Sammy Wanjiru has made a career of shattering records and blurring past city skylines, blowing by his sluggish pacesetters with a frustrated frown. No one can keep up with Kenya's Wanjiru these days, and that made racing against the world record time on Sunday at the Chicago Marathon that much more challenging. Without anyone pushing him in the final four miles, he had to be satisfied with the course record, but even that was surprisingly in doubt.

Deena Kastor Has Nightmare Race, and Emerges All Smiles

Deena Kastor had the kind of marathon day Sunday in Chicago that most of us have experienced in our nightmares, which is where we want them to stay. Hers came to the light of day on Chicago's frigid streets, but Kastor emerged smiling, optimistic, and apparently none the worse for wear. "I feel ecstatic about my training the last month, I enjoyed myself in the race despite some unexpected problems, and my foot feels fine," she said after finishing sixth in 2:28:50.

Olympic champion and reigning World Marathon Majors leader Samuel Kamau Wanjiru concluded his training on Tuesday and was confident he would do well at this weekend’s Chicago Marathon. He flies out on Wednesday night for his debut race on American soil. “I have never raced or visited America apart from passing there on my way to Puerto Rico in 2006, but the race will be beautiful since I will be in good company,” said Wanjiru. He was referring to his training mates, both in his home town of Nyahururu and in Ngong, whom he has “heard” will be in the line-up. This makes him think the race might end in 2 hours and 4 minutes, or even 2:05.
