Passing Train Stalls Iowa Marathon Runners

he leaders in the Des Moines Marathon could see the finish line they just had to wait a bit.
A passing freight train forced the two leaders in the 26.2-mile race to wait for about a minute Sunday just 400 meters, or about a quarter mile, from the finish line. When the train finally passed, Kenyan Simon Sawe sprinted to a win in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 50 seconds. He won $3,000.
Race director Chris Burch said Monday it was an unfortunate circumstance beyond the control of race organizers.
"It's one of those things, when I heard through our communications” what can you do at that time?" Burch asked.

The University of Iowa women's XC team has been to the NCAA Championship for the past three years. Each of those years the Hawkeyes have had their #1 runner in the top 10, but this year the dynamic has changed. The women don't have that power house up front but they do have a strong, tight pack. This fall they aim to make their fourth consecutive NCAA Championship and will be looking to beat some great teams out of their region this weekend at PreNationals up in Terre Haute. Imagine being an Olympian at age 15. Imagine watching a man being shot and killed on your bus. Imagine travel across the world for competition at age 16.....and never coming home.
Thats just a piece of what Diane Nurki experienced at a young age in her native country of Burundi. Diane made a choice to level her family to escape the civil war in Burundi and give herself a chance at doing something with her life. She stayed in Canada where she didn't know the language, made it through high school learning french, and then was found by coach Layne Anderson who direct her to the states (where she again, did not know the language.
This month Diane is making her first trip back to Burundi since she left 8 years ago. She's a different person from what her family knew....a college grad, an all-american, speaks multiple languages, and now married. She's traveled down roads many of us could never imagine!

Coach Wiz has been a Hawkeye for many years having not only been the coach for 24 years (starting his 25th year this season), but also competed as an athlete. He ran against some of the greats including Gerry Lindgren and Jim Ryun. 2009 marks the start of Layne Anderson's 7th year at the University of Iowa. Layne has experienced success early on leading the Hawkeyes to the NCAA Cross Country Championships each of the last three years, finishing 10th in 2007. All three of the years the team also had an individual in the top ten in Diane Nukuri (8th, 4th) and Rachel Marchand (5th). Coach Anderson talks about the road that led him to Iowa and forming a team that expects to be at the NCAA meet each year. Keflezighi wins his second career Bix 7 title

Anthony Famiglietti and the guys figured they knew how to get the best of Meb Keflezighi.Keflezighi had run the Quad-City Times Bix 7 four times before Saturday and had been in the top five each time, winning the race in 2002. But his rivals in Saturday's 35th annual Bix figured if they just pushed the pace really hard really early, Keflezighi would wilt.
First-place prize is $12,500 for Bix 7 road race

The male and female winners of Saturday's Bix 7 road race in Davenport will earn a check for $12,500 up from a first-prize of $10,000 that was offered in previous years.The event, which begins at 8 a.m., is also part of the USA Track and Field championships for just the second time in its 35-year history.

American record holder Alan Webb toed the line in the Drake Relays Visa Men's Mile for the first time since setting the Drake Relays invitational mile record in 2007 of 3:51.71. Webb was challenged the entire way before crossing the finish line first in 4:00.61.
