Eric Sexton comes to Wichita State's athletic department as an outsider with a lot of insider ties. WSU announced Sexton's hiring as athletic director on Wednesday, a move that soothed coaches and administrators in the department. Many of them know Sexton, 43, from his many years as a WSU student, golfer and employee involved with the department.

The Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation has announced that Waddell & Reed Financial, Inc. has agreed to be the title sponsor of the Kansas City Marathon for five years. Waddell & Reed originally sponsored the event when it made a comeback in 2005. The contract, which goes into effect in 2007, extends Waddell's sponsorship to a total of seven years through 2011.

On a muddy course, junior Colby Wissel, the 2006 Big 12 champion, led the way for the Jayhawks, finishing 26th overall.
Times proved to be slower because more than five inches of rain fell on the course in the week leading up to the event.

The Kansas Relays certainly has seen better days. First, a massive fight at the after-party (bearing the Relays’ name) breaks out at Abe & Jake’s Landing in April. Then, the headline act, sprinter Justin Gatlin, has a positive drug test that was conducted following his leg of the race at our hometown’s meet.

The Wichita State women’s track and field team did what it has been doing all season. The women scored 45 points, only four points away from winning a team award, to finish in sixth place at the Midwest Regional this weekend, a huge first for the program.

Senior Cameron Schwehr ran a time of 3:43.64 in the 1,500-meter run. Also competing in the 1,500 race, senior Joshy Madathil narrowly missed a qualification of his own. Senior Erik Sloan finished in second place in section two of the event with a time of 8:59.17.

It's a job where one minor mistake can put a damper on an entire meet. From his spot in the infield near the starting line, the clerk is in charge of getting the athletes checked in and ready to go for the next race.
The nickname “Sunflower State” calls to
mind the wild flowers of the plains of Kansas and the officially
recognized state
flower.
