As a youngster, Joan Benoit dreamed of going to the Olympics. She finally got her chance to try out for the inaugural women's marathon in the 1984 Olympics. After setting a world record in 1983 for the women's race in the Boston Marathon, it seemed quite probable. But two months before the trials, her knee hurt badly enough that some days she couldn't walk upstairs without severe pain.

The 70-year-old Camden resident won his age group and the one below it (ages 64-69). In fact, only one runner in the 60-64 age division finished the 13-mile course faster than Warren. That runner was 43 seconds quicker.
