Big-time cross-country racing is coming to Maryland. USA Track and Field has selected the Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood as the venue for the 2009 USA Cross Country Championships on Feb. 7. The event will be hosted by the Montgomery County Road Runners Club.

A new Guinness Book of World Records record was set this morning at the Frederick Marathon. Michael Wardian, of Arlington, Va., set the record for the fastest marathon while pushing a baby in a stroller.

The Penn Relays record for the high school boys mile run had stood for the last 35 years. Not anymore, thanks to Broadneck High School senior Matthew Centrowitz. It wasn’t enough that he became the first runner to win the 3,000-meter run in one year and follow it up with a mile victory the next, but Centrowitz also took down one of the oldest records in the books of a meet that spans over 113 years.

Centrowitz showed up at the Armory tonight looking to run a fast mile before his 3200 at NIN next Sunday. The meet originally had a 1500 on the lineup, but added the special mile event after the last 1500 feet. Matt had brought along a pacer that was going to bring him through the first 1000 and the meet director added the two fastest seeds in the 1500.
