Winding Down By Luke Humphrey [Blog Entry]
Posted by TheRunning
My nearly one year experiment is finally winding down. After the 26th, I will get some down time and then begin my much anticipated (to me, at least) marathon build-up. It has gone well, for the most part. I have run three track 10k's since the end of October, which was a first since June 2005. They were all faster than that 10k years ago. I set a new road 10k PR of 29:38, which was a solo effort. I also can boast a modest 3k PR. I never really got a good crack at a 5k or mile PR attempt. My last 10k effort in Corvallis was the best I was able to do for a race of 3 people and as Jason Lehmkule can attest to- would have been much better if we had a few more bodies in the race. I didn't break 29 in the 10, but I think if we could have had 2-3 more people in Corvalis, both JAson and I would have been under. But, it is what it is. The training was very good. Working out with the young guys certainly brought some pop back into these old marathon legs. Training has gone very well and I am excited for what the fall can bring. by Luke Humphrey

Willis wary of altitude
Posted by TheRunning
Olympic 1500 metre silver medalist Nick Willis told Sportal NZ that he has struggled to come to grips with the role a coach has in sport.
Willis, the latest in a line of middle distance stars from New Zealand who came under the influence of coaching legends like Arthur Lydiard and Arch Jelley, said it had taken him years to finally accept just how to use coaching to supplement his talent, but that advice has seen him avoid the rush to take up altitude training.

My race with Nick Stanko in the Detroit marathon will obviously never be famous like Alberto Salazar and Dick Beardsley in Boston, but on a smaller scale it gave me a little taste of what it would be like. Even though I didn't win and it wasn't one the of major marathons I had a great experience. by Chad Johnson via Flotrack

Some people believe that Ohioans gave Michigan the
nickname “The
Wolverine State” around 1835 during a dispute over the Toledo
strip, a piece of land along the border between Ohio and Michigan.
Rumors in Ohio at the time described Michiganians as being as vicious
and bloodthirsty as wolverines. This dispute became known as the
Toledo War.
Another reason given for the nickname is a story that has Native
Americans, during the 1830s, comparing Michigan settlers to wolverines.
Some native
people, according to this story, disliked the way settlers were taking
the land because it made them think of how the gluttonous wolverine
went after its food.
Another nickname for Michigan is the “Great Lake State.” Michigan's
shores touch four of the five Great Lakes, and Michigan has more
than 11,000 inland lakes. In Michigan, you are never more than 6
miles from
an inland lake or more than 85 miles from a Great Lake. From 1969
to 1975 and from 1977 to 1983 Michigan's automobile license plates
featured
the legend, GREAT LAKE STATE.
