"I'm devastated not to be able to compete in Birmingham this weekend," Radcliffe said. "The world half marathon is a great opportunity for our athletes to compete in front of a home crowd and I'm disappointed I can't be part of that.

Track and Field Blogs - Dot McMahan

Since my last blog I’ve had a few changes in my life. I had a baby in May. Elizabeth Brooke McMahan came on May 4th weighing in at 7 lbs and 20 inches. She’s a complete joy. I’m watching her sleep as I type this. Her legs are in my sleep position and her arms are in her Dad’s sleep position. It’s been fun “seeing” ourselves in her. by Dot McMahan via Flotrack

Biking Vs. Running By Brian Sell [Blog Entry]
Posted by TheRunning
I've been watching the Tour De France every day on Versus as have many of my current and ex-teammates. The Tour has been an interest of mine for a few years now, ever since Miguel Indurain impressed me with his ability to push a 60 tooth chainring when most guys were using 52-56 teeth on the front. Although they're both long distance races, riding the Tour, and running a marathon are quite different. The adavantages from drafting in bicycling are amazing. Bob Roll said the other night that a drafting cyclist gains about a 30% advantage over the guy he is drafting off of. It got me thinking how great it would be if running were the same. - by Brian Sell via FloTrack

Some people believe that Ohioans gave Michigan the
nickname “The
Wolverine State” around 1835 during a dispute over the Toledo
strip, a piece of land along the border between Ohio and Michigan.
Rumors in Ohio at the time described Michiganians as being as vicious
and bloodthirsty as wolverines. This dispute became known as the
Toledo War.
Another reason given for the nickname is a story that has Native
Americans, during the 1830s, comparing Michigan settlers to wolverines.
Some native
people, according to this story, disliked the way settlers were taking
the land because it made them think of how the gluttonous wolverine
went after its food.
Another nickname for Michigan is the “Great Lake State.” Michigan's
shores touch four of the five Great Lakes, and Michigan has more
than 11,000 inland lakes. In Michigan, you are never more than 6
miles from
an inland lake or more than 85 miles from a Great Lake. From 1969
to 1975 and from 1977 to 1983 Michigan's automobile license plates
featured
the legend, GREAT LAKE STATE.
