A 66-year-old amiable oilman from Pawlik had great success on the masters scene in 2005. He won the men's decathlon (M65) with a world-record 7,909 points and posted an American record in the 100 meters, clocking 15.81 seconds to win a gold medal at the World Masters Outdoor Championships in San Sebastian, Spain.

"The 400-meter dash was a tremendous race," said MSU head coach Al Schmidt. "It was Jamel's (Ashley) fifth 400 on the weekend. His last three races were 44.98, 44.75 and 44.80 on a relay. Everybody stepped up for us tonight. LaChristopher (Lewis) hadn't run a 400 since the Penn Relays because of his injury. Elzie (Coleman) did a great job. He really just popped out of the blocks and that's a lot to ask of a freshman.
Mullings Withdraws From NCAA Track Championship

Mississippi State University track and field athlete Steve Mullings announced Tuesday that he was voluntarily withdrawing from the 2005 NCAA Track and Field Championships, set to begin Wednesday at Sacramento, Calif. Mullings, the SEC champion in the 100 meters, issued the following statement: "In light of recent events, it is with great regret and after much thought that I have decided to remove myself from the 2005 NCAA Championships in Sacramento, California.
