Half the distance, twice the fun: Half-marathons taking off

It's been a long process to convince runners that racing 13.1 miles isn't actually half of anything. Perhaps it's that awkward name, half-marathon, which has somehow made the event seem less important. But given the recent boom in half-marathon running, it's clear that more and more runners are targeting the distance, either as a stand-alone challenge or a stepping stone to a full marathon.

Kenyan runners Christopher Toroitich and Caroline Rotich won the Las Vegas Marathon on Sunday, topping a field of more than 27,600 on a frigid morning in the desert. Toroitich crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 15 minutes, 15 seconds, holding off Terefe Yae of Ethiopia by 1:27. Assefa Tesfaye of Ethiopia was another second back in third place.

It was nearly one year ago when Kenyans Joseph Kahugu and Jemima Jelagat won their respective divisions of the New Las Vegas Marathon on Dec. 10, yet neither has received their prize money checks, according to the agents who represent them.

Called the “Silver State" because of its large silver mine industries. Named as the “Sage State” and the “Sagebrush State” for the wild sage that grows there prolifically.
