Olympians' workout draws Hayward crowd
Posted by Matt
On a warm evening, much like the night of the 800 meter final at the U.S. Olympic Trials, U.S. team members Nick Symmonds and Andrew Wheating showed off their final tune-up before the Beijing Olympic Games in front of a backdrop of a few hundred parents and athletes Wednesday at Hayward Field. Each athlete ran distances longer than the 800m they qualified for the Olympics in. Symmonds chose the 1,000m, a distance he'd never ran before, finishing in a time of 2:17.78. An unusual distance, the 1,000m has been run by only 14 runners this year, of which Symmonds' time ranks eighth.
Beijing bound

Being an Olympian is great, it's a huge dream come true, said Nick Symmonds, whose personal best of 1 minute, 44.10 seconds gives him the seventh-fastest time in the world this season. But I want to be able to say I'm an Olympic medalist, in particular, an Olympic gold medalist. Whether it happens this year, or it takes me four more years to accomplish it, that's the new goal
A Brief Chat With Nicole Teter
Posted by TheRunning
Nicole Teter, 34, has made her second U.S. Olympic team as an 800-meter runner, joining Hazel Clark and Alice Schmidt on the American roster. She was fourth in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene with a 2:01.30 but will be going to Beijing because third place Kameisha Bennett did not have the Olympic "A" standard of 2:00.00 or better. via RunnersWorld
Track isn't a very big draw in our country. And that's just nuts.

In the midst of covering the U.S. Olympic Trials, I was asked on a radio show to explain why anyone should care about track and field. Why pay attention to a sport that has let us down with its drug use time and time again, that gives us athletes to root for once every four years? by Luke Cyphers

Interview with Amy Yoder Begley
Posted by Matt
Amy Yoder Begley had jumped on board with the Nike Oregon Project in January 2007 in hopes of reaching her full potential, and she did exactly that on the first night of the Trials. The shoo-ins Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher were almost certain to finish first and second, but the third spot was up for grabs. Yoder Begley seized that spot, even leading for part of the race.

They don't fault Adam Goucher, because he just wants to run. But they'd like to run, too. Welcome to the hullabaloo over the men's 10,000 meters. After an appeal, Goucher's in tonight's race ahead of seven others with faster times. They're not happy about it.

The American Beaver (Castor canadensis) was named Oregon
state animal by the 1969 Legislature. Prized for its fur, the beaver
was overtrapped
by early settlers and eliminated from much of its original range. Through
proper management and partial protection, the beaver has been reestablished
in watercourses throughout the state and remains an important economic
asset. The beaver has been referred to as "nature's engineer," and
its dam-building activities are important to natural water flow and
erosion control. Oregon is known as the “Beaver State” and
Oregon State University's athletic teams are called the "Beavers."
