U.S. in another 'running boom'
Posted by TheRunning
What's going on here?
Are we experiencing the "Running Boom'" Part Deux?
The 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, became infamous for the senseless murder of 11 Israeli athletes at the hands of Arab terrorists.
For Americans, however, the stunning victory of Frank Shorter in the marathon changed the way we looked at the sport of long-distance running. Shorter became the first American to win the Olympic marathon event since 1908.
Indeed, most Americans had no idea what the marathon was, let alone its weird 26.2-mile distance. Some folks may have heard of the Boston Marathon, an event that had been held since 1896, but few Americans had the desire to tackle the race itself. Shorter's Olympic victory, and its subsequent publicity, ignited a phenomenon known as the "running boom."

The word "keystone" comes from architecture and refers to
the central, wedge-shaped stone in an arch, which holds all the other
stones in place. The application of the term “Keystone State” to
Pennsylvania cannot be traced to any single source. It was commonly
accepted soon after 1800.
At a Jefferson Republican victory rally in October 1802, Pennsylvania
was toasted as "the keystone in the federal union," and in
the newspaper Aurora the following year the state was referred to as "the
keystone in the democratic arch." The modern persistence of this
designation is justified in view of the key position of Pennsylvania
in the economic, social, and political development of the United States.
