Baby Ritz #2
Oregon
As many already know, we have our second child on the way. We found out about two weeks ago that we will be having a baby boy. We were a little shocked when we heard the news. There is some crazy statistic that male distance runners and cyclists have mostly girls. Aside from that, my Dad’s family has seven girls and only two boys, and my Mom’s family was four girls and no boys. On my wife’s side it is similar as well, so we were thrilled when we broke the odds.

Sandrock: Jason Hartmann races into the spotlight On Running
Colorado
Jason Hartmann has always picked his training partners well.
From his earliest prep days in Rockford, Mich., where one of his high school teammates was future U.S. record holder Dathan Ritzenhein, through an All American career at the University of Oregon, to Jorge Torres and the Tempo Sports elite training group he joined in April, Hartmann has trained with some of America's best.
Despite his height -- Hartmann is 6-3 -- and his success, some of those teammates have overshadowed him. For example, his senior year of high school, Hartmann ran 9:01 for two miles -- a great time, but much of the attention was focused on Ritzenhein.

Dathan Ritzenhein runs faster than U.S. record for 10 miles in a workout
Oregon
Dathan Ritzenhein exceeded the U.S. record for 10 miles on Monday in a workout.
The U.S. record holder in the 5,000 meters is gearing up for the World Half-Marathon Championships in Birmingham, England on Oct. 11.
Ritzenhein covered the 10 miles in 45 minutes, 3 seconds -- running 4:30.3 per mile. He did half the workout on the track and half of it on the road. Alberto Salazar administered the workout.
How good is that?
Consider that Deriba Merga's world record for 15K was recently ratified at 41:29. That was en route to a half-marathon. Ritzenhein ran 41:45 for his final 15K on Monday's 10-miler.

Kennedy not concerned record isn't his any more
Indiana
As far as Bob Kennedy was concerned, his record had lasted too long anyway. While track and field can sometimes suffer from too much emphasis on times and not enough on competition, Dathan Ritzenhein's time Friday represented a landmark achievement.
Ritzenhein finished third in the 5,000 meters at Zurich, Switzerland, in 12 minutes, 56.27 seconds. That broke the American record of 12:58.21 set by Kennedy, also at Zurich, on Aug. 14, 1996.

Dathan Ritzenhein set an American record in the men's 5,000 meters and Sanya Richards continued her quest to win her third Golden League crown Friday at the Weltklasse Zurich, the fifth leg of the AF Golden League 2009.
Thirteen years after Bob Kennedy set the American record of 12:58.21 in the 5,000 meters at the Weltklasse Zurich meeting , 2008 Olympic marathoner Dathan Ritzenhein smashed that record by almost 2 seconds finishing third in 12 minutes 56.27 seconds. It was an almost 20 second personal best for Ritzenhein, which makes him the second-fastest non-African in history and only the third American ever to run under 13 minutes.

Dathan Ritzenhein's 5,000-meter record shows U.S. is 'closing the gap'
Oregon
It has been a summer of promising, yet incremental, progress for U.S. distance running.
On Friday in Zurich, Switzerland, recent Portland transplant Dathan Ritzenhein punched through barriers mental and physical to set a new benchmark, placing third in the 5,000 meters at the Weltklasse Golden League meet and breaking a 13-year-old U.S. record.
Ritzenhein, last early on and in danger of losing contact with a fast field, found a groove and chased his way into the record book with a time of 12 minutes, 56.27 seconds. That broke Bob Kennedy's U.S. standard of 12:58.21 set at the same meet in 1996.

And it's the tale of two coaches, the very personal and involved and hands-on (he believed in hugs) Bob Brown of frequent state champion Iowa City Regina High School and the more reserved man of fewer words, the "mystical" legend Mark Wetmore of Colorado, for whom McCue struggled to achieve even the status of a "walk on."
