World Records Safe, but Crazy 8's Lives Up to Billing
Posted by TheRunning
With a return to more seasonal weather in the Tri-Cities, perhaps the collective men’s and women’s records breathed an inanimate sigh of relief after the annual Crazy 8s road race -- the world’s fastest 8K tilt – came to a close late Saturday inside J. Fred Johnson Stadium. However, the two races had surprising endings, giving added meaning to the constant ‘Crazy’ adage applied for these fan-festive Funfest favorites. While elite runner and Kenyan native Simon Cheprot pulled away from fellow runner, and friend, Alene Reta, a native of Ethopia, at the 6K mark – the bolt down Memorial Boulevard – to a rather surprising men’s victory against a star-studded field at 22:21, Ethopian native Meseret Mengsitu led the field at the one-mile mark by a whopping 100 yards en route to an easy women’s win by crossing the tape at 26:20.
