Sophomore Sam Chelanga and his Liberty University teammates will compete Saturday at the NCAA Cross Country Southeast Regional at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. Chelanga was been the outstanding male cross country runner of the U.S. fall season. He made his debut in a Liberty uniform at the Paul Short Run in Bethelem, Pennsylvania and won the 8k race by 38 seconds in 23:05.

Liz Maloy returns to lead Georgetown

Having used all of her eligibility last year, graduate student Liz Maloy never thought that she’d have the opportunity to race collegiately for the Blue and Gray. Yet seeing that Maloy only raced twice in cross country between her freshmen and sophomore years at Georgetown, the team decided to file for an extra year of eligibility with the NCAA.

While the outbreak of norovirus on campus this past week postponed many sporting events over the weekend, the men’s and women’s cross country teams had one-third of their regular season cancelled in one fell swoop as the Notre Dame Invitational and the Mason Invitational continued without the Hoyas.

Alan Webb's progress began to plateau in March, forcing him to scale back his training and racing. In his first outdoor performance last month at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., he finished seventh of nine competitors in the 1,500. I'm confident overall, but at the same time I'm not where I was last year at this time, Webb said. I was just much more race-sharp.

At the moment, Alan Webb bashers are clobbering him on the track message boards for the relatively mediocre times he posted in his two outdoor races this season -- 3 minutes, 55.47 seconds in the mile on June 8 at the Pre Classic, and 1:47.41 for the 800 meters six days later in Indianapolis.

Five runners sprinted toward the finish line of the Carlsbad 5000, and Alan Webb wasn't among them. In fact, not even close. The American mile record holder dropped out about a half mile before the finish of the 3.1-mile road race Sunday, his legs dead and hurting too much to even jog in.
