Ashland native Pete Julian has been hired as an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Washington State University.Julian, a successful collegiate coach and professional athlete, will join the staff of head coach Rick Sloan.Julian will coach the men and women middle distance, distance and cross country runners, replacing Jason Drake, who accepted a position at the University of Washington.

Seattle's largest-ever marathon, the inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon, unfolded Saturday with few hitches. The weather was sunny, the route along Lake Washington offered spectacular views and the event was choreographed with precision. Perhaps the biggest single complaint were the traffic snarls on Interstate 5 that delayed those trying to make it to the start for 30 minutes or more.

On November 11, 1889, Washington became the 42nd state to enter the Union. It is the only state named for a president. Washington was nicknamed “The Evergreen State” by C.T. Conover, pioneer Seattle realtor and historian, for its abundant evergreen forests. The nickname was adopted by the Legislature in February, 1893.
