One of the most successful coaches at the University of Wisconsin is running away. Jerry Schumacher, the Badger men's cross country and track distance coach, is leaving the program to take a position with Nike coaching elite distance runners in Portland, Ore.
Chris Solinsky on his fourth place finish in Prefontaine Classic two-mile

Chris Solinsky got a major pre-Olympic Trials confidence boost at yesterday's Prefontaine Classic, where he placed 4th in a loaded 2-mile field and ran a personal best of 8:15.77. Chris hung with the leaders throughout the race and into the last lap, and in the end was beaten only by three former world champions Bernard Lagat, Rashid Ramzi and Paul Koech.

Matt Tegenkamp ran his first 5,000m of the season at the Hengelo meet on May 24. In a race that Kenenisa Bekele won in 12:58.94, Matt was 10th in 13:28.52. Three days after the meet, he discussed his race with his massage therapist, Brian Blindt.
No Canadian record or Olympic "A" standard for Simon Bairu, due to lap-counting error

Simon Bairu went to Europe last week intent on achieving the Olympic A+ standard in the men’s 10,000m event. The initial results of the invitational meet in Neerpelt, Belgium, showed he had run inside the standard with a spectacular Canadian record of 27:30.90.

Jack Bolas breaks Wisconsin's 30-year-old mile record with 3:59.40

The outstanding performer at the meet was sophomore Jack Bolas, who won the invitational mile and broke a 30-year-old UW record with a time of 3 minutes, 59.40 seconds. The previous best of 4:00.4 was set by Steve Lacy in 1978, nine years before Bolas was born.

When DtB last talked to Jenelle Deatherage, HERE, it was on the heels of her 8th place finish at the 2007 USA Outdoor Championships in Indianapolis. She was trying to find some answers in frustrating season that had challenged her confidence What a difference seven months can make!
“Badger State” Although the badger has been closely associated with Wisconsin since territorial days, it was not declared the official state animal until 1957. Over the years its likeness had been incorporated in the state coat of arms, the seal, the flag and even State Capitol architecture, as well as being immortalized in the song "On, Wisconsin!" ("Grand old bager state!")
