The University of Wyoming track and field teams started off their indoor season when they hosted the Wyoming Open on Friday, in War Memorial Fieldhouse. The field consisted mostly of Wyoming and Colorado State athletes.

Higgins adds record to her titles

Higgins, a junior, won her third consecutive 3,200 state title on Thursday and finally broke the Class 2A record in the event, something she's been trying to do for three years. Her time of 11 minutes, 35.22 seconds at the Wyoming State High School Track and Field Championships shattered the old record of 11:41.18, held by former Rocky Mountain standout Jeanna Blair.

Gillette boys take aim at fifth straight title

Gillette's bid for a fifth consecutive title at the Class 4A Wyoming High School State Boys Track and Field Championships got off to a rousing start in the first track event of the meet. Graydon Curry and Paul Burke finished one-two in the 3,200 meters on Thursday at Kelly Walsh's Harry Geldien Stadium to give the Camels an edge on the field. Green River and Rock Springs are expected to challenge Gillette for 4A dominance.

Cowboys fifth, Cowgirls sixth entering final day

The Wyoming men are fifth and the women are sixth heading into the final day of the Mountain West Conference track and field championships at Colorado State. The UW men now have 30 points after a strong showing in Friday's field events. Both the men and the women will have more chances to score points today in the finals of the sprints and middle distances. UW athletes ran the fastest times in four of Friday's preliminary races.

Vanden alum decathlon star at Wyoming

Thomas, who walked on to the Cowboys' track team after a stellar athletic career at Vanden High, took third place in the decathlon at the Glenn Morris Multi-Event meet in Fort Collins, Colo., last month. It was only the second time he competed in the event, but he's hooked now.

The University of Wyoming multi-event athletes showed signs of personal improvement at the Glenn Morris Mult-Event, Friday afternoon in Fort Collins, Colo.

Wyoming is known as the “Equality State” because of the rights women have traditionally enjoyed there. Wyoming women were the first in the nation to vote, serve on juries and hold public office.
